Modern Boheme vol. 13 | Mushrooms are Magical for the Environment

Mushrooms are low-energy, low carbon footprint, nutrient dense fungi that can aid in the rehabilitation of degraded environments. October 15th was National Mushroom Day, which made me curious about their environmental impact. I discovered so much and had to share. Mushrooms have certainly received a lot of attention in recent years specifically for the adaptogenic properties that some possess. Read on to find out why we should be putting more mushrooms in the ground, and on our plates.

Modern Boheme vol. 13 | Indigenous Peoples are Essential to the Environmental Movement

Indigenous people play a key role in stewarding biodiversity and it’s far time that they are respected and amplified as leaders in the climate and environmental movements. Monday is Indigenous Peoples’ Day (officially recognized in 14 states and 130+ cities) and we must move beyond simply recognizing Indigenous peoples and their contributions to centering their leadership.

Modern Boheme vol. 10 | Joy as Climate Change Resilience

Fragrant Jasmine wove around the doorway of my parents’ home in Sierra Leone when my mom was pregnant with me. The striking greenery, star-shaped flowers, and sweet scent are where I got my name and it feels fitting that 30-something years later I’m working to preserve the environment.

Modern Boheme | September 2021: America’s Water Infrastructure Problem

Torrential rains flooded parts of the East Coast as Hurricane Ida swept up the country. Along with it came flooding that experts had warned about and that cities were not able to handle. It highlighted the perfect storm that is bearing down on this country: aging water infrastructure and climate change threaten already failing and fragile water systems. As we wait to see what the fate of the $550 billion bipartisan infrastructure deal will be, it’s clear that we need to dedicate a large swath of money to overhaul water infrastructure and to address how urban areas mitigate the impacts of climate change. According to CNN, $55 billion is being proposed to “upgrade water infrastructure” and another $50 billion would be dedicated to “making the system more resilient -- protecting it from drought, floods and cyber attacks.” Will this be enough?

Modern Boheme | July 2021: Can outdoor spaces in urban areas mitigate climate-change impacts?

On Sundays, sometimes I like to head down to the Upper West Side and grab a bagel and an iced coffee before strolling over to Central Park to find a bench to park on with a book. One of the first outdoor activities I did once it warmed up this year was to visit the cherry blossoms by the Jackie Onassis Reservoir after enjoying a sticky bun on a park bench and watching all of the cute dogs pass me by.

Summertime is my absolute favorite produce season. From lush cherries to thirst-quenching watermelon to buttery lima beans, it feels like the summer harvest is a love letter from the land. Seasonal produce goes beyond simply tasting delicious, but it also can help support the local economy and reduce climate-change related gas emissions.
