Some good news I came across this week to share with you:
Flying has a large carbon footprint, but Google has created a tool to help you choose better flights for those times where a plane is the only way to get to where you’re going. While not perfect, the introduction of this tool could help consumers make greener travel decisions. Check out the full article on AP News.
“The new features are part of a sustainability initiative Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted Wednesday.
“Climate change is no longer a distant threat — it’s increasingly local and personal,” Pichai wrote in a blog post. “We need urgent and meaningful solutions to address this pressing challenge,” he added, saying the company has committed to run its data centers and campuses on carbon-free energy by 2030.”
Another vaccine breakthrough has taken place recently, this time tackling malaria. As Reuters covers, “Malaria killed 274,000 African kids under 5 in 2019.” While the vaccine is a perfect solution (few vaccines are), combined with oral medicine it could greatly reduce the number of children who are killed by malaria each year.
“"This is a vaccine developed in Africa by African scientists and we're very proud," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
"Using this vaccine in addition to existing tools to prevent malaria could save tens of thousands of young lives each year," he added, referring to anti-malaria measures like bed nets and spraying to kill mosquitoes that transmit the disease.”
WATCH
I finally found a show to match the lightheartedness of Schitt’s Creek and fill the hole in my heart as I looked for something to wind down my day. Enter: Kim’s Convenience on Netflix. I’m a bit late to the game (nothing new there), but I had remembered hearing a lot of good things about it online and I’m happy that I finally checked it out. If you’re looking for a show with short episodes that balances a family dynamic with humor and serious topics, you’d got to check it out!
LISTEN
Yes, I’m sharing some more Brené Brown. I will not apologize for my love of her and deep appreciation for her work. On Thursday, I listened to the episode with Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman on Big Friendship. It really resonated with me, because I’ve always spent a lot of intentional thought into centering friendships in my life. Hearing Brené, Aminatou, and Ann’s thoughts on the importance of friendship was incredibly affirming and I cannot recommend it enough.
TASTE
I have been curious about making gnocchi for a long time and recently I’ve come across some pumpkin gnocchi recipes that are spurring me to make a valiant attempt this coming week. This Pumpkin Gnocchi with Brown Butter Sauce from Chisel and Fork sounds absolutely divine. I’ve also seen some tutorials on how to make the gnocchi pumpkin shaped! Wish me luck in my attempt and if you get to it first, please let me know how it goes for you.
in joy,
