take a taco tour of NYC | 2021

Recently, my boyfriend and I created our own taco tour for date night! We’ve leaned really heavily into being creative during the pandemic and we always end up doing something fun and unique together.

For the taco tour, we each chose two places we really wanted to try, plus one that we had on both of our lists for a total of five. There was a bonus location not far from me, but we weren’t up for it this time.

After choosing the five taco spots we wanted to visit, we charted a path that made the most sense and decided to try one taco at each spot. Five tacos seemed pretty ambitious, but we started early in the afternoon so that we could take our time. Based on reviews online, we decided on which taco we wanted to try at each location.

Our five stops were:

  1. Taco Mix Grill | al pastor taco

  2. Casa Birria NYC | birria taco

  3. Borrachito | el gringo taco

  4. Tacos Cuautla Morelos | spicy pork taco

  5. Tacos No.1 | nopal taco

Borrachito had a really cool speakeasy-style seating area and we stopped there to eat in, plus had a drink before continuing on to the rest of our stops. However, our favorite taco was the spicy pork taco from Tacos Cuautla Morelos! The pork was perfectly seasoned and had the right balance of fat to meat so it wasn’t dry. I could have eaten two more of those if I had space in my stomach. The nopal (cactus) was our most adventurous choice and I think it must be an acquired taste!

We’re already thinking of doing round two to try the other places that were on our list that we didn’t have a chance to visit. It was super easy to plan and could easily be applied to other kinds of foods, like cinnamon rolls or samosas, or different kinds of cuisine, like trying an Italian appetizer, main dish, and dessert all at different restaurants.

If you’re interested in using the same itinerary as us, I’ve included the Canva templates below for you to edit and print. I printed ours at Staples, laminated them myself, and happened to find the perfect stickers at Dollar Tree for our tracker.
