Sunday Brunch Round-up | Jul 12 - 18th
This week’s feast for your senses.
READ
Damon Young wrote a great post for The New York Times summing up how many Black people feel right now as strangers, colleagues, and distant acquaintances suddenly want to engage with the reality Black people have been living. Yeah, Let’s Not Talk About Race is both succint and lyrical. A must read.
“The people doing the least can be found in every viral video clip of a white person hysterically refusing to wear a mask at Trader Joe’s. These people are unhinged, dangerous and just plain goofy, willing to die (and kill) over Jicama Wraps and Kale Gnocchi. And the people doing the most? Well, the most happens anytime a white person encounters a Black person who writes about race — or just a Black person who just happens to be Black — and the Serious Conversation About Racism (SCAR) must ensue. This isn’t a new phenomenon. I’ve been SCARed before in the grocery store express aisle, between pickup hoop games at the gym, while getting a colonoscopy, and at least 82 percent of the unsolicited emails I get are drive-by SCARings. But now America feels like a deleted scene from “Get Out.” Or better yet, “The Sixth Sense.” But instead of seeing dead people, white people see us as walking, talking, antiracist book lists.”
It’s no secret I love sending and receiving physical mail, but I’m not the only one. A week or so ago I came across a thread on Twitter that had individuals living in assisted living who would also love some mail! Can you grab some postcards for the city where you live and pick 3-5 people to send a note to this week? (There’s also a Facebook page)
WATCH
I must warn you — if you pull up this video I am not liable if you catch the Holy Spirit in your living room. Elevation Church took their incredible song, “The Blessing”, to another level with The Blessing | Gospel Revamp | Elevation Worship. Whew!
Speaking of Holy Spirit, this 17-minute clip from Pastor Steven, How To Have An Honest Talk With God | Steven Furtick, is also a great reminder that, “He chooses who He wants to choose and doesn’t consult people…He will not consult your failure to see what He does through your future. When God calls you, He wants you!”
LISTEN
Have you been having trouble sleeping recently? It seems like some nights it’s easier than others. Recently, I came across this 10 Min Guided Meditation For Sleep & Relaxation | Fall Asleep Fast With Soothing Rain Sounds on Youtube. It put me right to sleep on Thursday. Give it a try if sleep has seemed more and more elusive as of late.
Do you need background music for getting chores down around the house, DIYing, or cooking? I first heard ‘lo-fi hip-hop’ in the back of a Lyft when I was in New Jersey. I often like to work in silence, but during the pandemic, I’ve been enjoying having some background music to break up the monotony. I had this on most of the day Friday while I worked: lofi hip hop radio - beats to relax/study to.
SMELL
The satisfying aroma of a clean home is unparalleled! I usually do my cleaning on Saturday and then I have my Sunday to relax completely. As you may have seen on my Instagram this week, this week I’ve been taking a closer look at green cleaning alternatives. There are a lot of great DIYs for a household cleaner and I found a post online that has 100 DIY recipes! Could you try one of these this week: 100 DIY Household Cleaner Recipes That Will Save You Money.
TASTE
This week I’m trying my hand at this delicious looking Japanese Garlic Butter Fried Rice! I couldn’t find the secret ingredient (and I’m pretty sure it’s packaged in plastic so I’d skip it this month, anyway!), but I am going to try to mock up something similar with what I have on hand. If you make it, I’d love to know what you think. Drop me a line here or over on Instagram.
in joy,
