Here is this week’s feast for your senses.

READ

  • Tamara Toles O’Laughlin wrote an incredible article about the intersection of dismantling white supremacy in the criminal justice system and the environmental movement in, If you care about the planet, you must dismantle white supremacy. It’s a short, but poignant read.

    • “The reality is that the communities being battered by both the coronavirus and climate are also epicenters of over-policing, incarceration, and state-sanctioned violence. In every aspect of our lives, starting in our mothers’ wombs, we are systematically devalued. Black communities face the long-term effects of environmental racism, intentionally zoned into neighborhoods surrounded by factories, highways, pipelines, and compressor stations. Systemic exposure to toxic fumes has caused higher rates of asthma and disease in Black communities, making us more vulnerable to the coronavirus. This adds a grim familiarity to the death-throw pleas of “I can’t breathe,” made by both George Floyd and Eric Garner while they were choked to death by police in Minneapolis and Staten Island, respectively. Those pleas are the latest in a long line of unmet calls for a shared sense of humanity in the face of white-supremacist violence that has been built into the system itself.”

WATCH

  • I posted a Tiktok on Earth Day about 2 ways you can get more involved in the climate movement. If you need help finding an organization in your community to get involved with, feel free to slide into my Instagram DMs and maybe I can help you!

LISTEN

  • Green Tech Media produced a podcast episode about environmental racism, Breathing While Black: Structural Racism, Coronavirus and Pollution Are Part of the Same Story. Environmental racism isn’t a new concept, but it is becoming a topic of conversation in more mainstream environmental spaces once more. It’s important to note how the climate crisis impacts the planet as a whole, but also how it impacts communities at different rates due to structural racism.

    • “The issue of structural racism in policing and criminal justice has suddenly come to dominate the national dialogue once again. But understanding the story of race, energy and the environment is also a key aspect of grasping the anger of the moment.”

TASTE

  • Warm weather called for an outdoor date night yesterday! After taking a stroll along The Highline (one of my favorite parts of the city), we had delicious food from World’s Wurst, strolled through Washington Square Park, then got a drink at a bar we stumbled across called Oppa Bar. Everything was delicious! I recommend the Berliner from World’s Wurst (the service was also incredible!) and the Aegyo cocktail from Oppa Bar. The weather is supposed to be nice again this week, so grab a brat or a cocktail and enjoy the coming of summer!

in joy,
