Here is this week’s feast for your senses.

READ

  • With the recent senseless killing of Daunte Wright, the country’s call to defund and/or abolish the police continues to grow. In an article from Slate, The Myth of the Dangerous Traffic Stop Is Killing Black Men in America, they break down the origins of when and why cops were taught that traffic stops pose a severe threat to their lives. As race also plays an obvious major factor, this was an interesting read from another angle.

    • “Racism surely plays a role here, but there is another reason so many appalling police shootings involve motorists: Law enforcement officers are taught that routine traffic stops pose extreme danger to their own lives. Courts have seized upon this idea to water down the constitutional rights of drivers, justifying police brutality on the grounds that officers must act quickly to protect themselves against the random violence that always lurks just around the corner. This theory has pervaded American law and law enforcement for decades. It is also untrue. In a 2019 article published in the Michigan Law Review, Jordan Blair Woods demonstrated that violence during traffic stops is, in fact, extremely rare.”

The Future Is Summit

WATCH

  • This is an upcoming virtual event, but I wanted to share it now so that you don’t miss out! Intersectional Environmentalists is hosting a summit called “The Future Is”. It’s a several-hour event on Saturday afternoon (if you’re an East Coaster) that will host panels and discussions about environmentalism to “strengthen your understanding of climate justice history and unlearn shortsighted narratives about environmentalism”. Tickets start at $5 and the proceeds from ticket sales support the Summit speakers, IE team, and even help another person be able to attend the event. Hope to see you there!

TASTE

  • I’m determined to actually start making some of the recipes I save on Instagram and I plan to make this rec this week. It’s Blueberry Cheesecake Baked Oats and it sounds delicious! As the weather has warmed up, I’ve been experiencing huge cravings for fruit like peaches, blueberries, and cherries. Now that I’m on my way to being fully vaccinated, I anticipate getting back to kickboxing classes, so I have been eating more oatmeal to help support my stamina. The fact that you can easily whip this up the evening before and then have breakfast completed sorted the next morning is the almond butter on the oats for me. If you try this recipe before me, let me know over on Instagram what you think!

in joy,
