This week’s feast for your senses.

READ

  • I subscribe to a handful of newsletters and two of them were really excellent this week so I have to share them with you. One is from Duff the Psych, from Dr. Robert Duff, a psychologist. He wrote about boundaries, below is a snippet of my favorite takeaways:

    • “I've been coming to the realization lately that boundaries can be a form of compassion.

Boundaries are basically guidelines that describe what sort of behaviors are and are not okay in relation to you…These are rules of engagement that often imply some sort of consequence if they are not followed. If someone repeatedly violates your boundaries, you may need to limit your contact with them or take some sort of action to demonstrate that their behavior is not acceptable.

This does not always feel good. Sometimes it can feel like crap to set boundaries. It's easy to feel like you are being the bad guy because you are putting restrictions and limits on another person. But when it comes down to it, boundaries are really about compassion. For one, you are treating yourself better by setting a standard for your life that is less harmful. That is a great way to take care of yourself.

Boundaries are also a form of compassion for the other person. As a friend of mine recently said boundaries "give other people the tools to keep you in their life." You aren't asking them to read your mind. You're giving them a playbook. You're outlining the rules so that they can operate within them.”

  • The other is from Seedlings, a curated eco email that is released each week. This week they interviewed Varshini Prakash of the Sunrise Movement, shared book recommendations, and some (pleasantly) surprising facts about secondhand clothing.

    • “Better than new
The secondhand clothing market, which grew 21 times faster than apparel retail in 2019, is set to triple in value in the next ten years. While fast fashion will grow 20% in the next decade, secondhand fashion will grow 185% (emphasis mine). Shoppers are becoming more aware of the ecological impact of fashion, which is responsible for 20% of global wastewater.”

WATCH

  • I finally binge-watched the brilliant, I May Destroy You, from the brilliant Michaela Coel. It’s a masterful gaze on sexual assault and what the path of healing can look like. (Vulture’s interview with her is also a worthwhile read).

LISTEN

  • Yes, I am a sucker for every single one of those vintage music compilations on YouTube and I found another to share this week! I’m currently listening to Vintage Winter Music (that isn't Christmas) and it’s truly the perfect background music to have wafting through the apartment.

TASTE

  • Anyone else feeling a little antsy about the normal cold and flu season on top of COVID-19? I’ve been trying to incorporate natural immune support into my routine and I picked up several fingers of ginger recently. They’ve just been sitting on my counter, reminding me that I have to do more than just look at them, and I finally researched how to make Ginger Root Tea.

BONUS! MAKE

  • As we prepare for a quarantined winter, I’ve been trying to find new projects to keep me from going stir crazy. I’ve been interested in quilting for years and I began crocheting sporadically this summer. This winter, I plan to work on making a quilted jacket and a chunky crocheted sweater. If you’re looking for a fabric source, consider Melanated Fabrics and if you’re also curious about making a quilted jacket, check out the tutorial over on Buried Diamond’s website.

in thanks,
