READ

  • I came across an incredible Vanity Fair article, Why the Next Part of the Sustainable Fashion Conversation Will Be About Racial Justice. Sustainable fashion has been trending for a while and that trend has surged in the last few years. After the world watched George Floyd be murdered, there was a severe outcry and brands responded largely with black square activism. Consumers are holding them accountable and a look at brands’ supply chains has led to an increased demand for racial justice.

    • ““For a long time, sustainability has been a problem that’s been easy for people to look outward to try to fix,” James continued. “There’s been a lot of companies that are very quick to talk about sustainability, but not quick to talk about racial equality. But at the same time, we also know that climate change most directly and most quickly impacts Black and Brown communities.””

  • It’s National Ocean Month and this week I wrote a short, personal essay on what the ocean means to me. Would love for you to give it a read!

candlelight concerts

LISTEN

  • I’m so grateful that live music is beginning to make a return! This past Thursday, my boyfriend and I went to a live Vivaldi concert by candlelight performed by a string quartet in a NYC loft and it was incredible. Fever is planning to expand their candlelight series, so check to see if they’re coming to your city and plan to get some tickets!

WATCH

  • In case you missed all of the buzz, High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America on Netflix is a must watch! A food writer follows the origins of African-American food all the way back to Africa in this four-part series. Described in a Vice article as:

    • “Ultimately, what the series is attempting to capture is the “soul” of soul food. It is a spirit that can be hard to put to words, even if you can feel it in the pit of your stomach after a spoonful of sweet yams and savory macaroni & cheese. Together, the combination somehow “tastes like home,” even if we've never been to Africa.”

TASTE

  • I’m a big fan of snack foods and Trader Joe’s continues to serve up some of the most delicious and affordable snacks. While I was in the checkout line on Monday, I grabbed a bag of Oven-Baked Cheese Bites with Black Summer Truffle on a whim and promptly fell in love! The addition of the truffle adds flavor without being overly salty and they are such a convenient way to snack lightly. I’m sure they’d be the perfect picnic, beach, or charcuterie board addition.
